As has been made very clear by the name of the school, we have put a tremendous emphasis on academic achievement. We have been fortunate enough to secure two of the foremost individuals in this area each having their own expertise.
Bette Shippam; M.Ed.
Ms. Shippam has her master's degree in education from Simon Fraser University and specializes in curriculum development. She was instrumental, with the Native Language teacher, in developing the Native Language Program curriculum for the Coldwater School.
Dwight Gardiner; PhD.
Dr. Gardiner has his doctorate degree in linquistics having based his doctoral dissertation on the Secwepemc language. Affiliated with the Department of Modern Languages at Capilano College, where he teaches linquistics, Dr. Gardiner is also a member of the First Nations Curriculum Design Committee working on a First Nations Studies specialization.
Dr. Gardiner is currently developing language modules that will be taught according to proficiency level rather than grade level. This is revolutionary in curriculum development and will continue the process of being introduced into the Ministry of Education standards across the province.
Having been a longtime friend of the Kamloops Indian Band dating back to 1984, Dr. Gardiner has been invited to help elders document their knowlege of language and culture as well as worked on a research team for Scheidam Flats litigation and also helped to produce the KIB Traditional Use Study.
We thank both of these individuals for their committment to this project and look forward to the implementation of the curriculum.
